If you have ever owned a dog, you know that these animals are smart. They are also scavengers that are used to roaming across open land, searching for food. Dogs may learn to escape for a variety of reasons. These reasons include:

5) Something Catches Their Eye

And although a dog may believe it wants to escape, a free dog is a dog in danger. Cars, people, other dogs, dangerous foods - all of these can put your dog at risk for injury and possibly death. Even something as simple as a movement by a biker or a jogger can cause your dog to wander off. The only way to ensure that your dog will not escape is to keep it on a leash or watch it behind a safe, inspected fence, free of holes or other ways your dog can escape. However, if you do not have time or cannot afford to fix your fence, there are a few methods you can employ.

• Take your dog for long walks. A tired dog will have lost the instinct to roam, so it will have much less of a desire to make its escape.

• Give your dog plenty of toys so that it has enough to do in your yard or home and doesn't have as much of a desire to pursue other interests.

• Be present - you do not necessarily have to constantly watch your dog, but if you are outside with it or in an area where your dog can get to you, it will be less likely to search for attention in other places.

• Have your pet spayed or neutered. In addition to becoming sexually active, un-neutered dogs can become aggressive. Unless you are planning on breeding your pet, you should always have it spayed or neutered. Some owners think this is cruel, but many dogs, especially male dogs, tend to lead much healthier lives after the surgery.

• Add wires underneath the ground if your dog digs, so that it cannot dig under the fence.

• Make sure your fence is in perfect condition, with no holes that your dog can slip through and is high enough that your dog cannot jump over it. Some dogs jump higher than even they lead you to believe, so make sure your fence is as tall as you can afford.

Also, unless there are some sort of aggression issues, never chain your dog up. It is cruel to not at least allow your dog to wander your home or yard.

Finally, never punish your dog if it does escape. A punishment could tell your dog that the next time it shouldn't come back.

As long as dogs are not allowed to roam the streets alone, there will always be dogs escaping from their owners. But if you keep your dog's safety in mind, you can prevent any unfortunate accidents.

10 Tips for Building a Great Dog House

You don't want to invest a lot of time, effort and money into building a dog house only to find that your dog won't use it. So, here are some tips for building a great pme that you dog will love and use.

1. Most of us like houses where there is at least two feet of air above our heads - in order to avoid feelings of claustrophobia. This comfort zone translates into about 1/3 of our standing height. You should allow your dog the same amount of airiness. Figure out how tall the dog is (or will be when fully grown) and then make sure the dog house roof is at least 1/3 taller than this.

2. The dog house should be raised a few inches off the ground to allow water and air to flow under it. Also, be sure there is adequate ventilation. You can ensure this by drilling few nickel-sized holes in the walls under the eaves.

3. Install s a wind block inside the house so the dog can use its own heat to warm things up when it is cold or windy.

4. When evaluating plans, look for one that either includes a partial wall or is large enough that you can add a partial wall. This is so that the dog can escape the elements as necessary. If the weather is bad, the dog can choose to either sleep in the entry room or go around the inner wall into its "inner sanctum."

5. Slant the house just a bit toward the door. This helps ensure that if any rain enters via the ventilation holes or doorway, it will drain out the door. Also, make sure you slant the roof to ensure proper run-off.

7. Build it so the door faces away from storms. Good dog houses are usually built facing east as most storms come from the north or west.

8. Put hinges on the roof for easy cleaning. When you clean the dog, make sure you also clean his house and bedding. After all, you would not want to sleep in a room that hasn't been cleaned for months or a bed where the sheets haven't been changed for weeks.

9. When choosing a site, make sure it is not in an area that drains poorly, or where rain frequently accumulates. The dog house should not be sited near a river or stream where it (and your dog) could be swept away by a flood. Also, do not put the house on an unstable ledge where erosion or a seismic effect could cause trouble.

10. Also, be sure to consider your dog's habits. Some dogs like to sit on top of their house. If this if true of your dog, don't put roll roofing or shingles on the top of the dog house since they can get very hot in the summer.

My sister has an adorable little chihuahua named Tinkerbell, named after Paris Hilton's famous pet. We had to go grocery shopping and she agreed to come along (with Tinkerbell cleverly concealed of course!) However, we had barely made it out the door when my sister just had to make a detour - she'd spotted a new pet shop en route to the grocery store, and she was dying to take a peek to see if they had any small dog clothes or accessories, that might be unavailable in the stores closer to home.

Out of all of Tinkerbell's clothing, the one outfit I love the best is her wooly, pink parka with the faux fur trim around the hood. However, Tinkerbell has chosen a favorite doggy clothing item all her own. An ensemble that makes her absolutely wriggle with excitement - a poufy, pink ballerina tutu!! It's absolutely ridiculous and yet, when Tinkerbell is wearing that obscenity, she poses and struts like nobody's business. She's hot stuff, cute as a button and quite simply adorable... and she knows it!

* Another popular toy for your adult dog or puppy is a strong rope. It allows them to chew on something and also it allows you to participate during playtime by pulling and tugging on the rope.

* Create your own dog toy – to make a chewable toy for your dog, put some cheese or his favourite treat inside a sterilised bone. Give your dog the bone and it will try to reach the food inside of it. This toy is ideal to stimulate the dog when he is home alone.

* Do not give your dog old clothes or shoes as play toys. If you let your dog chew these items, it will assume that this is an acceptable behaviour and will do it to other shoes and clothes! Dogs cannot distinguish between old and new things, so bear that in mind when you choose normal household items as toys for your dog.
